Great for people new to fitness or old gym rats |
| After sporadically working out for the last few years, I bought this book to change up my workouts, and it is amazing. I've done about eleven weeks of just mostly the weight training workouts and hit or miss cardio, have not been really doing and visualtion or following a nutrition plan (thats why I work our so I can eat what I want) and I have lost just over twenty pounds now, plus have great arm definition. I find the workout are all easily done within an hour so I can get in and out of the gym fast. The descriptions of each exercise are great even though I'm familiar with them I like to read them over before hand, and although the book does lack traditional index the pg numbers for particular exercises are referenced in each workout, so I feel it was easily nagavitable. I'm pumped up to try another ten weeks, maybe with the nutrition plan and see what it will do. |

Excellent-- the best on this subject! |
I've been hesitant to purchase these types of books specifically for women, but did so once I saw the great reviews written here.
The great reviews here are well deserved. This is an AMAZING book. THis is the most thorough book I've seen on weight training. This book answered EVERY question that other books left unanswered. In addition, the workouts that are included in here are excellent. Not many books teach you how to alter your workout from day to day, from week to week, and from month to month. This one does.
An avid exerciser, I have been doing these workouts for a week. And, every day, I've been sore. I've felt muscles that I didn't realize I had. I used to weight train 3 days per week and do cardio three days per week. Now I've increased my weight training to six days per week and my cardio to six days per week, also. Each exercise is COMPLETELY explained in a way I've never seen before. If one follows the author's instruction, proper form is guaranteed.
Included are workouts for the absolute beginner, for the not-so-new beginner, for the advanced exerciser, and for those who don't have any body fat to lose, but want to gain muscle. For the advanced exerciser (which is what I'm doing), there are so many variations and routines that can follow you through 6 weeks. After that, you may want to cut your weight training back, or continue along those lines. I work out at home and am able to do these on my well-equipped home gym. Otherwise, I'd have to go to the gym. The basic workouts can be done at home with dumbbells and a bench.
This is my favorite book on this subject. As a matter of fact, I'm going to be taking a break from reading any other books on this subject for awhile. . . since everything I need to know at this time is included here. I may pick up the abs book, too, but that would be only because I'm so impressed with this book. As it is, I currently do the Slim in 6 abs routine six days per week rather than the recommended workout included here. For abs, it's just much easier for me to go along with a dvd.. . keeps the momentum up and the Slim in 6 abs routine is excellent.
Included also is a lot of diet information. It is also excellent, although I've kept to my own eating plan which I'm happy with.
The only improvements I would recommend is that this would have had more publicity than it did (I didn't even know about this book until recently) and that it be rereleased in hardcover and some color photos. But, really, I couldn't praise this book any more than I have. It's absolutely the most thorough I've seen. |

The Perfect Body Does Not Come Easy |
But if you follow the workouts in this book, you will see results. I am an avid exerciser (at least 1 hr of cardio 6x per week) who has been lifting weights regularly since my teens. So, I was looking for a book that would challenge me and spice up my lifting routine--and this book delivers. Within two weeks I had people asking me if I'd lost weight (I hadn't, but my already athletic shape had changed to be more toned). I have been doing the 14 day "Advanced" workout and I keep up my same cardio routine. I did not follow the nutritional plan in the book--it seemed dull and far too rigid. So, here's my review:
Lifting 6 times a week is a lot. You will be sore and tired. "The perfect body" doesn't come without a lot of work, and I like the fact that this book doesn't try to argue an easy way out. If you want to change your shape, but don't want to spend more than 15 mins or a few days per week in the gym, then this is not the right book for you. This book is for people who:
1) Like to work out (in a gym) daily
2) Are looking for a "serious" workout
3) Are already in good physical condition
4) Want to either change their current routine or are looking for some structured routines to follow
And you will see results! The descriptions and pictures are a great refresher to make sure you're executing the moves correctly.
I have only 2 criticisms of the book:
1) While the workouts are split into 2 week segments, the actual exercises don't change after 2 weeks (just the reps and amount of weight). With 6 days a week in the gym, this gets a little old after about a month or so.
2) In the advanced level, the reps go too low and weight too high in the last 2 week section. Lifting that much weight that many times a week is too much and risk of injury too high.
Overall, I am really impressed with this book--definitely money well-spent. This book definitely has a solid place in my exercise library. Even if you don't follow the workouts or want to put one together yourself, the descriptions and pictures of the exercises can help anyone make the move from the stairmasters and treadmills into weight room!
